First week in Kasese

Culture shock, contrasts and positive students

Afrika-Bistand/Kultur has now finished its first week in Uganda and impressions and expertise about East Africa have risen sharply. Here is a picture from the taxi center in Kampala.

THE SLUMS OF KAMPALA

After a comfortable flight from Oslo via Doha and to Entebbe, it was pleasant to enjoy the luxury at the Fairway Hotel. The contrast became all the greater when we with the guides Overdose & Brenda (raised in the slums) walked from the embassy area, crossed the main road Kampala Road and went down into the sea of people through the local market Ovino - where no whites are recommended to go. With good smiles and a desire to chat with the locals, a double dose of smiles and hospitality returned.

Introduction to tastings of local brews. Not bad, but different.
Grand Old Lady-eternal Anne Kath was like a magnet to the young men in the slums. Here with Overdose

KAMPALA KASESE

This 8-hour drive west is a wonderful film reel. Difficult to collect more different cultural impressions in one day.

From the slum we traveled back by local taxi and Boda-boda, before the drive towards Kasese.
When there were no people along the road, these slightly dangerous baboons appeared.

WELCOME TO REEC

A great start to the Kasese stay was the welcome ceremony, with brilliant performances by the school's students and our volunteers - Best Ever!

Small stop in the neighborhood before we entered the REEC and the schools.
The guests of honor gathered in the shade at 30 degrees. Mild weather!

AGRICULTURE

Yesterday was a rich day with chief agronomist Iver Husum as director. Another great commitment by the volunteers - with the establishment of chicken and egg production. In addition, we planted banana trees and released the first fish in the new fish pond (eventually 30000 fish) - which is this year's big investment. As well as a tour of the entire facility - including the large water tanks. There was also time for some planting of aubergines.

The gang gathered on top of a water tank.
The plant specialists in action!

THE FOOTBALL PROJECT og NATIONAL MATCH

An adventurous football tournament organized by the volunteers and employees of SC Bronken. Most likely the only one of its kind in Uganda. We can do children's and youth sports in Norway - in Uganda this is new work. And then it was ready for the big football highlight: Women's national match Uganda-Norway. An exhausted but satisfied Afrikaans team played a superb match. Result 1-1

Two teams who were satisfied with their efforts and results in sunshine and 35 degrees!
