Hunting / Fishing electives in training hunting
Elverum Folkehøgskole is lucky and has a good collaboration with local hunters, who offer students in hunting / fishing electives to participate in both elk hunting and deer hunting.
This day we get to be with Frank and Stefan on training in deer hunting with a loose driven dog. Frank and Stefan are experienced hunters and swear by the dog breed Drever as a useful breed for this type of hunting. Hunting and mail placement take place together around the fire. The dogs hunt both deer, foxes and hares, and guidelines are laid down for what may be shot if there is a chance of shooting.
The student joins the post office, observes and takes part in the hunt in that way. Not long after the dog is released, it searches for fresh tracks and the pilot is up and running. The deer is near several posts and ends up with one. Shots are fired and deer fall. We gather and the rumbling of the deer begins. The procedure is reviewed by Stefan. Those of the students who want to groom the animal under the expert guidance of Stefan.
The hunt ends with a gathering around the fire and there is good talk about the experience.
A great autumn day in the forest that ended with deer fall. Glorious.
