Lofoten fishing in Svolvær

Lofoten fishing is the annual seasonal fishing for skrei in Lofoten. It is one of our most traditional fisheries in Norway. The season lasts from February to April and has for many centuries been very important for both the local and national economy. Fishing boats from large parts of the Norwegian coast find their way to Lofoten every year at this time. The fish swims on a food migration along the coast of Finnmark, but when it is ready to spawn it moves in towards the coast. In February/March, a large number move into the Vestfjorden in Lofoten, where the most stable spawning conditions are.

The students at Norwegian Culture/Adventure got first-hand experience as fishermen! Unfortunately, we didn't have the fishing luck with us this time, but all the more joy when Tess pulled up one just before we headed for land again.

Vikings in Lofoten

Lofotr Viking Museum at Borg is a museum that consists of a large longhouse (chieftain's house) and a museum that shows archaeological finds from the Viking Age in the local area. The museum is alive, here Vikings walk around in Viking clothes and tell and show crafts, among other things, the students could try swords, breastplates and helmets and more.

Northern Lights – The Polar Light Center in Laukvika

At the Polar Lights Center in Laukvika, we were met by two inspiring zealots with a great passion for the northern lights. We learned about what the northern lights are, under what conditions it is easiest to see them and how to monitor solar storms to be able to predict when they will appear.

North of the Sun

Inge Wegge gave an inspiring lecture to the students about the film "North of the Sun". He and a friend lived on a beach for nine months, where they built and lived from the waste that appeared on the beach. During this time they cleaned the 700 meter long beach and got rid of almost three tonnes of rubbish. You can watch the film on netflix, press here.
