Art and Music Unite in the World of Aesthetics - Part 1

We collaborate across the lines to attach sound to image with different art techniques

Aesthetics is defined as the doctrine of what is beautiful. Instruments such as colors, lines, timbre, harmonies, depth, repetition, form, contrasts, format and symmetry / asymmetry together form a composition where everything comes together into one work. The same instruments are used more or less in both the composition of music and works of art. We challenged the students divided into 7 groups to find answers to the following:

  • What does it mean to be aesthetic?
  • What is the origin of aesthetics?
  • What are the aesthetic common denominators for art and music?
  • What is an aesthetic experience?

Then we will work together throughout the autumn with three different projects around aesthetics. In this first part, the students were assigned Jean-Michelle Jarre's composition Oxygene, Pt. 4 and the task is to associate the soundscape from that song down to an image. Students first draw the outline of objects in the room with an extended arm in the form of a soft pencil at the end of a broomstick to make different lines and shapes as a starting point. Then they get to use grease colors and felt-tip pens to bring down the group's feelings and thoughts using these lines and shapes on the sheet. This results in 7 very different expressions, lots of good reflections, feedback and an incredibly creative day for both musicians and artists. Just look forward to the last two parts of the project!
