Music - Band / Vocals

Interview: Six weeks at Music - Band/Vocal

Vilde is 18 years old, from Karmøy and attends the Musikklinja, with singing as the main instrument. The first thing I remember is that she showed me a small, compact video camera with great enthusiasm and wondered what I thought of it. - Little, I said, and grossly insulted her.

When will I be on Instagram?

A little later, a photo gallery from the music line was posted on Instagram. There were no pictures of Vilde. The suspicion that the photography teacher had something against her grew.

Vilde: When can I get on Instagram?
Photography teacher Eivind: We can make an interview and publish it?
Savage: Deal!

And that's how this interview came about. Lucky, because Vilde has some very good observations about his first time at folk college.

Feel free to follow Folke høgskolen on Instagram to see if there will be more pictures of Vilde or go straight to her own insta @vildeher_.

What made you choose Elverum FHS?

There were several reasons why I chose Elverum FHS. I quickly got the impression that the school would give me much more than other schools I applied to. The school grounds themselves are nice, tidy and very homely. The boarding schools also seemed incredibly good.

I am studying Music – Band/Vocal, and much of the reason why I chose this line here was that as a vocalist I can learn a lot from both teachers, but also my classmates who play other instruments. I have already experienced that you learn a lot from each other.

Another thing that attracted a lot of interest is the tours my line goes on. Among other things, we are going to London in the autumn, interrailing after winter, and a tour around Norway where we will play at other folk colleges.

How have you experienced the school year so far?

My school year has been very good so far. As an extrovert, I have learned that mastering being alone is a very important thing since you are around people all the time. I have gained much more self-awareness and learned a lot about myself, even though it has only been a little over a month. I have also finally learned to wash my own clothes - to a certain extent 😉

I have made many good friendships that I hope will last a lifetime. You get to know each other very quickly when you are so close, and it feels like a friendship that has lasted for many years.

I am incredibly happy with the teachers, who treat us as if we are their friends and not just students. The class clicked together very quickly. It feels like we are a small family with line teacher Arild as dad 🙂

What would you highlight as highlights?

The biggest highlights for me have been the new friends I've made and the concerts on the Glitterheim tour (joint school trip to Jotunheimen after a week) which was absolutely magical - at least when we saw the northern lights late at night.

Also the "Active for others" concerts. The whole Aktiv for others, two days of aid runs for local school children where we played a concert for 1500 pupils, was really a highlight. I am really looking forward to creating new highlights this year.

What are you doing online now?

So far we play an extremely large amount of music and produce cool stuff together. We have spent a lot of time rehearsing for the concert we had at Aktiv for others, and generally just learned a lot from each other and our teacher (Pappa Arild). We have visited music theory and production and recording songs, something that will go deeper into beyond the school year. I am very much looking forward to this.

What are you going to do in the week after the autumn holidays?

After the autumn holidays, the music line will go to London for four days, which we are all very much looking forward to. We will be living in Camden, and we have been given responsibility for cooking breakfast, lunch and dinner when we are there. It will be incredibly fun and rewarding to do such tasks together as a class.

We are going to a musical and a concert in Europe's most famous jazz club, and visit Abbey Road, the street with the studio where the Beatles recorded much of their music. As I said, Elverum FHS has the best tours 😉

What tips/advice/experiences do you have for people who are considering applying to folk university?

Does. 100% I would really recommend everyone to go to folk college. I've only been going here for a little over a month, but I've already made a lot of good friends, learned a lot and can't wait to learn more.

My advice is not to expect too much before you start. I had no expectations and then the start and the school year in general became much more exciting due to the fact that I had not built up an expectation or a hope for how the year will/should be.

Try not to think of folkehøyskole as a place where you only learn one specific thing. You learn a lot more than you think about relating to all kinds of people, other cultures and really finding yourself.
