Interview: Gaaren about music, life after FHS and warming up for Sigrid

"Folkhøgskole was my first encounter with sharing the music I had made for others, and that was the start of me as a musician"

Carine Gaaren

25 years
Student, Trondheim
Student on the Music line 2017–2018

What have you used your time after folk high school for?

I have studied political science and social economics in Trondheim and have really enjoyed it, but I have always written songs in my spare time.

In the spring of 2022, I joined a songwriting camp in Trondheim called Song:expo, and through that I got a music network in Trondheim and in a way got back to music again.

I contacted two producers I had been in a group with there, and we started the artist project that summer. Since then I have been both a student and actively worked with the artist project.

What drives you to make your own music?

If I'm bored and in my own thoughts, I hum something that turns into a melody. Other times I hear a song and am inspired to make something similar.

I really like making songs, putting words to feelings and creating melodies from words. Songwriting for me is a way of processing thoughts and feelings.

How did you get picked up by P3 Urørt, and what has that meant for your music project?

Urørt listens to all the songs they are sent, and the fact that they should recommend the very first single was a big surprise.

I also attended a listening club in Trondheim where I presented "Losing Myself" where Urørt was also present, I think that also had something to do with the fact that they later got in touch to warm up for Sigrid.

Untouched has meant a lot to this music project, they have followed up by recommending all the songs, playing the songs on the radio, mentioning the artist project in an article about "artists to watch in 2024", and letting us warm up for Sigrid without ever have performed the songs live before. Untouched has really given this artist project a chance and it's really cool.

How did you get the opportunity to warm up for Sigrid, and what was that experience like?

Urørt made contact through Instagram, and luckily I saw the message before it was too late.

They called and told me that they were looking for artists to warm up for Sigrid, and even though I said "yes", it was still not certain that we would be selected. I received the confirmation phone call two weeks before the concert date.

"It was just getting to the rehearsal room and practicing all the songs we had never played live before"

The experience was very positive, we had a very good sound engineer with us, and a very good band. It was a unique opportunity to be able to play a debut concert for a large audience, and I'm glad we dared to jump at it.

What ambitions do you have for the artist project "gaaren" going forward?

We have started on the next songs to be released in the spring of 2024, and have booked a few more concert opportunities. I hope we can continue as we are doing now, producing songs and playing them live. I know that I will always write music, so I hope that this artist project can continue for a while. I'm really open to a lot and we'll see what 2024 brings.

What did your year at folk college do to you as a person, and to you as a musician?

My year at Folkehojskole was certainly important! I developed a lot as a person just in one year when I got to meet lots of different people and made new friendships that I still have today.

The music course at Elverum folk high school was also my first encounter with being in a studio and singing my own songs on a stage, and I learned a lot about production and concerts there which has stayed with me.

Folkehøgskole was my first encounter with sharing the music I had made for others, and that was the start of me as a musician.
