Life at school

Interview: Ella Hughes with visual EP

The song Run is now on Spotify, and we have had a chat with former music student Ella about her journey from folk high school to music designer and stage artist.

What have you done after you finished at fhs?

After the year at folk college, I traveled to the Caribbean to visit family and get to know the place I'm from better. It is not unlikely that my interest in music and especially the rhythm in music comes from there.

Here I got to know an incredible number of new nice people and the culture there, and as if that wasn't inspiring enough, they live in paradise all year round without taking it for granted. A number of songs were written on these trips.

Back in Norway, I studied music design at Kristiania and had a few gigs in Oslo with other artists and alone.

You just released a single that sounds killer. Can you tell us a bit about your musical style?

Thank you very much! Yes, I've always been a big fan of R&B and soul, and usually end up making something in that genre.

In recent years I have developed a great love for several genres, especially electronica. It's hard for me to say what genre this song belongs to, but I'd say it's a mix of alternative pop, electronica and R&B.

Right from the start, producer Malin Brujordet Olsen and I were very interested in the percussion, and therefore wanted to make something that contained a lot of ear snapping.

It has become a song that is strongly influenced by this, and I feel that it can be played both before and after a party. I love it and will continue in this style.

What drives you to make music?

It has always been in the cards for me to do this in some way. Having said that, I haven't always been so high on the hat.

Not so long ago I considered giving up music completely, but was forced back a bit by the exam project I had set up. This project turned out to be the coolest thing I've done and gave me back the spark. It suddenly became out of the question not to publish anything.

The project consisted of so many good people who spent all their time to make it a properly completed visual EP. The people around me have an extremely large influence on me. Surrounding myself with people who are really passionate about creativity is extremely important to me and my effectiveness.

As a creative person, I have a need to communicate, and a joy of creation that really drives itself a little.

What instruments do you play?

I produce and write. The vocals are my main instrument.

Where do you find inspiration?

As long as I take care of myself and prioritize doing the things I feel like doing, I am able to take inspiration from almost anything.

I can hear a simple little sound of something that is not an instrument at all, but get inspiration for a song from it.

What ambitions do you have going forward?

There will soon be an EP with visuals! So a visual EP with music I have produced together with people from the study. In addition, I have ambitions to hold lots of concerts and almost live in the studio! I also want to work a lot with the visuals in videos and at concerts, both for myself and others.

"At the folk college we played a lot live, and I found out that this is something I'm good at and something I love to do"

Thoughts on what your year at fhs has done to you as a person and a musician?

At Folke høgskolen I became more confident in myself, in my lyrics and on stage. This is because of very nice teachers and a class environment where we welcomed each other.

At FHS we played a lot live, and I found that this is something I'm good at and something I love to do. On the days that aren't so bright and full of inspiration, I like to look back on how much I loved our tour and get the urge to keep going.
