How to turn adversity into success? Seminar on mental health

Marius Løken survived what is referred to as the "Halloween murder" in 2011. Today he gave a lecture for Elverum Folkehøgskule about the way back to a good everyday life after an extremely traumatic event and how to achieve sustainable good mental health.

When Marius Løken was 22 years old, his life was turned upside down. A perfectly normal Saturday evening with two friends turned into what was referred to in the media as the "Halloween murder". One friend fell into acute psychosis and attacked them. Marius survived, but the other friend lost his life. After 20 stab wounds, 3 operations and 11 days in a coma, the most difficult period of his life began.

Take back everyday life

With humor and a twinkle in his eye, Marius told about his journey from when his world fell to rubble to how he fought his way back to everyday life. On this journey, he gained many experiences, reflections and acquired useful tools to achieve good and sustainable mental health.

Be open and generous with those you meet. It will benefit you.

Three points that are a minimum to get good and sustainable mental health

These points are often one of the first things to disappear when you encounter adversity or are in a stressful, difficult or tough period in your life. They are also the fundamental key points that need to be in place to get back up.

Physical Activity

The interaction between physical and mental activity is strongly linked! You don't have to become a marathon runner, but a minimum of physical activity is necessary for good mental health.

Routines

The value of establishing solid routines is good for the psyche and everyday life in general.
Do at least one thing every single day that makes you feel good! Most are weekdays, although many of us are very focused on weekends and holidays.

Social network

A good social network will help you overcome most challenges.
Together we are stronger! We are herd animals and having a social network is a preventive tool when life goes against you. Don't expect the same from all friendships, different friends can have different functions in your life. Look up and say hello! If you are nice to others, others will be nice to you.
