People's university students will receive a sharp increase in study support next school year

The study grant for folk university students will be increased by 10 per cent for the school year 2024/2025.

We are very happy that the student grant will increase from next school year. Now even more people will have the opportunity to choose a folk university, says Anne Tingelstad Wøien, director of the folk university council.

In the budget settlement, the governing parties and the Socialist Left Party (SV) agreed to increase the student loan by 10 per cent. This amounts to NOK 12 more than the student grant in 537.

In the autumn of 2024, a secondary school student will be able to receive NOK 137 in loans and grants from Lånekassen.

The increase in student aid will mean that more than half of all folk university courses will be covered by the student aid.

- This shows that the authorities recognize the importance of the community colleges, she says.

Conversion of grants and loans

40 percent of the student loan becomes a scholarship if the student completes his academic year within the absence limit of 10%.

This applies to both full- and half-year courses.

The price covers a lot

The price for one year of folk high school covers both meals, room, electricity, equipment and study trips.

- The increased student aid means that next year it will be cheaper to go to folk university, says Tingelstad Wøien.

Today there are 83 folk colleges in Norway with over 1000 different courses.

Folkehøgskole students are not affected by increased prices for food, electricity or rent during the year they attend folkehøgskole, says Tingelstad Wøien.
