Life at school

2nd year students' best tips for new applicants!

The 2nd year students are a separate class at the school who have been students at the school previously. As 2nd year students, they are responsible for initiating some of the social activities at the school in the evenings, some social pedagogical tasks, supporting students who need assistance, some marketing and content production and perhaps most importantly – contributing to a good environment at our school. Here are their best tips for new applicants!

1. Remember that you are not alone.
Everyone who shows up for the first day of school is excited – and many find it a little scary. That's completely normal, even though it may not always look that way.

2. Dare to bid on yourself
Dare to be open, take initiative, and say yes. Often, that's when the best friendships and experiences arise.

3. Step out of your comfort zone
It may feel unfamiliar, but it is often where you learn the most and develop the most – both as a person and in the community.

4. Take the chance to be yourself
Enjoy the surroundings and the freedom you have here. This is a unique opportunity to be who you have always wanted to be.

5. Be present in the moment
Time flies at folk high school. Put your phone away every now and then and pay attention to what's happening around you.

6. Use the common areas actively
The fireplace lounge, dining room, gym and outdoor areas are perfect places to meet new people. Say hello, stay a little longer – and learn the names of your new friends.

7. Be social – but remember to take breaks
There's a lot going on in your free time, and it's nice to be involved. At the same time, it's perfectly okay to retreat a bit and take some time for yourself when you need it.

8. Get to know the local area
Explore the school's neighborhood and find out what offers are available. It makes everyday life even better.

9. Bring a little more than you think you need
For example: kettle, slippers/Crocs, own mug, speaker, blanket, room decorations and hobby items. Better a little too much than too little – like two pairs of mittens instead of one.

10. Apply for the Loan Fund early
It's incredibly nice to have it in order before the school year starts, so you don't have to stress about it later.
