Lofoten with a focus on black and white

The art class experienced how they could draw, paint and scrape out light and darkness at the workshops in Lofoten.

The program also included a sculpture park, gallery visit, artist meeting, glass bead course, cooking competition, hot tub, pizza party, photo competition, yoga and tapas evening.

Scott Thoe, the artist of the world's largest mural, taught us that it is important to think in denominations - how much white and how much black we mix into a color. The more denominations of the color you use, the more depth and life there is often in the image. The art students practiced bringing out light and shapes between shading and dark areas with both pencil and acrylic.

When you have a dark surface and scrape away areas, so that the light comes through, it becomes a kind of negative effect. Scratching on a scraperboard, as the artist Kåre Espolin did, was different and educational. There were many good results from this workshop.

One of the highlights of the trip was probably the hours at Glasshytta in Kabelvåg, where we melted glass and each shaped our own glass beads. No one had tried this before, and many wanted to do more of it.

In the 4 days we were away, we visited Svolvær, Henningsvær, Kabelvåg, Nusfjord and Stamsund. After a long day on the road, it was lovely to come back to the nice cabins in Kabelvåg and cook dinner. The evenings were filled with, among other things, cooking competitions and yoga, while some also indulged in a sea bath between trips to the sauna and hot tub.
