The spring semester on the Outdoor Life line
January
The winter has established itself in January and we are working to improve skiing technique and endurance so we are able to carry out longer trips later this winter. Basic skills such as lighting a fire, finding firewood, splitting firewood and using a map and compass are also included. We get to experience and try out appropriate clothing for the season. Cooking is a must too.
February
We start February with a ski and sledding trip to get some training in sledding. Hedmarksvidda with a glorious, marked trail network and accommodation in DNT cabin in Målia. We continue with kite camp in Elgå where we use Femunden as a kite arena. It's nice to start the practical training there - there is not much chance of colliding with trees out on the ice to Norway's second largest lake.
Later in February, we gain experience of skiing with a backpack and spend the night in beautiful simple huts at Budor.
Mars
March is a fantastic winter month that offers great opportunities for active outdoor life. We are going on a longer trip in Femundsmarka on skis with sledges, move west and do some peaks in the area Ringebufjellet, ice fishing and lying in a snow cave.
April
April arrives and offers fantastic skiing experiences in the high mountains. Cold nights and warm days provide great skiing conditions, not least in the morning. We go into the heart of the mountains of Norway, where there are most high peaks and peaks in Norway, namely Jotunheimen.
After a nice week of skiing with a sledge, we turn our noses south and the special country coast. Exciting experiences in sea kayaking, and knowledge of coastal outdoor life await. We end the trip and our shared experiences with a couple of nights at Grønningen lighthouse outside Kristiansand
Addition from the Outdoor Life Teacher
These content presentations are a presentation of which trips we travel on through the winter months. There is little description of what one learns. What I want to give the students through this tour program is of course mastery of being on a tour. Mastering the winter outdoor life and having a comfortable trip is a lot of learning in itself, and the experience we give the students will increase mastery. In addition, we can add good learning goals such as collaboration and taking care of each other. Being able to work well together in slightly pressured situations where the body is a bit cold and tired, places demands on oneself.
We focus on a good six months, mostly on skis, towards the end of school.
