Here are the photos from Fotolinja's first studio project.
Training in studio photography
At the start of the school year, there is a lot to learn. Camera settings, apps, equipment and not least photo studio with lights and flashes.
Taking control of the light provides wild opportunities for creative work, and the task required the students to test different lighting settings to see what effect they got.
We learn from the pros
We started with "Rembrandt light" as the basic setting. The light is inspired by the famous painter, and has been recreated in photographs. It's a flattering set-up with soft and slightly dramatic light that gives very cool photos, with a main light from above to the side and slightly in front of the model. The distinguishing feature is the bright triangle under the eye on the opposite side of the light source.
From there it was free, but everyone had to submit at least one photo with "broad light" and one with "short light".
Broad light is what you get when you take pictures from the "bright side" of the model. Short light is when you move to the opposite side and focus on the dark side. The light may be the same, but the result will be very different.
We set up two studios, and the students were introduced to both flash and video lighting. The flash is superior in strength, but the video light is more flexible and makes it easier to play with colors, or "gels", and placement while you can always see more easily how the result will be.
