Life at school

Photo/Experiences: Analog-love ❤️

Before Christmas, the photo gang was given film in Copenhagen and started taking their first analogue photos. Now the pictures are developed!

We have spent the last two weeks working analogue, learning the whole process from start to finish. It involves loading film, setting the ISO, snapping, mixing chemicals, working in pitch darkness, setting up equipment, doing tests, calculating times and taking the image through various vats of chemistry to finish.

Interested in analogue photography? Read our beginner's guide:

The students have also taken pictures at school and in Elverum to get some "quantity training" on both photography and development.

The process in a nutshell

  1. Put film in the camera
  2. Set ISO (important!!)
  3. Shoot 36 shots
  4. Remove the film
  5. Roll it on a spiral in complete darkness, and place in a light-proof tank
  6. Mix developer chemistry in 20 degree water. Pour on.
  7. Agitate (stir) the tank periodically for 12 minutes
  8. Rinse the film
  9. Pour on fix, mixed with 20 degree water
  10. Agitate periodically for 12 minutes
  11. Rinse the film well. Use soap. Wash away foam.
  12. Take out the film, look at the negatives!

Paper copying

  1. Place the negative in the apparatus
  2. Open the blender fully and use a magnifying glass to focus
  3. Make a test by exposing a strip of photographic paper for 3, 6, 9 and 12 seconds
  4. Develop the test in developer, stop, fix and rinse
  5. Find the right exposure time
  6. Develop a whole sheet in the developer, stop, fix and rinse
  7. Set to dry

Finished! 😅
