The plastic problem

...also on Lamu

Monday morning we left to visit the flipflopi project outside Lamu Town. 30 years ago there was almost no plastic on the island. Today it has become a big problem and we joined Mary Stone on a tour of this great project to hear and see what they are working on - everything from collecting plastic products, to pressing and remelting and to creating new products. Impressive how they have made, among other things, beautiful Dhows from recycled plastic + outboard motor on solar power. Everything here is made from TakaTaka (trash)

Mary Stone shows off her warehouse of over 10 tons of plastic from the ocean

The entire dhow is made of plastic from the ocean and lined with around 1000 broken flip-flops.
They even made beautiful plastic models of the lovely Lamus chairs.

An exciting and important project that needs attention and new investors/sponsors. FLIP FLOP
