Africa in place in Rwanda and Uganda
Trouble-free flight with Turkish Airlines, no problems with visa purchase and the Steptown Hotel was ready with its own bus to drive us to the center of Kigali and a short night's sleep.
THE 1994 GENOCIDE
After a good breakfast, we got to experience the sea of people and the very well-structured capital, Kigali. The next two hours trigger very strong emotions - but also necessary ones. Kigali Genocide Memorial has become a thoughtful and painful journey of experience, combined with a beautiful place of remembrance for those left behind by close to 1 million people in the course of 100 days from April 1994.
RWANDAN 2024
It is terrible to say it, but this country has become an African pioneer country after they started the reconstruction a few years after the massacres. A wise president - at least at the time - worked with his government together with a world community with a very bad conscience. This highlighted a spirit of service that is not so common in neighboring countries. Towards a litter-free, plastic ban, good regulated roads, motorcycle taxis with helmets for both driver and passenger, large international conference hotels to name a few. Also guessing that the country does not have hopeless foreign debt either.
KIGALI KASESE
Two-hour bus ride without speed bumps to the border crossing Gatuna to Uganda. Very easy border crossing (we were worried) before we continued towards Kasese via close to 100 speed bumps! but what a welcome we got when we started the last hour across the savanna towards Kasese. The large elephants almost queued to join, a large herd of buffalo and several species of antelope were part of the welcome committee + a bustling birdlife. And in the last quarter we got to see the forces of real African rainy season. Power outages and zero grid did nothing and maybe not mass hatching of insects either???
FIRST MEETING WITH THE SCHOOL
Today we had a get-to-know-you-in Kasese day. Tomorrow there will be maintenance work at both the school and the football facility
