Local culture
and insight into Islam!
Fridays are the holiest day of the week here and after a delicious Barracuda dinner, the host Munib came and talked for an hour about being a Muslim and especially here on Lamu. Exciting to listen to and not least educational. With topics such as gender hierarchy, understanding of prayer, rules of conduct, Ramadan and raising children, the informal hour went by quickly.
Today we were joined by Kamora from Bananahouse on a city walk that continued into the large sand dunes and ended up in the villages of Mararani. Most of the Kenyans from the mainland live there and work for families in Shela. They are not Muslim either and the consumption of palm wine showed that Ramadan is not practiced there, but for us it was a great cultural moment. With the serving of madafo (coconut drink) and song & dance where Elverum FHS was very involved - at least in the dance. Two nice hours in the desert and Mararani.
